Local SEO - Sudbury and surrounding area.

One of the goals of this website was to develop techniques so that if a resident of the local area makes a search, they will find what they are looking for.

SEO is part of my research into website design and optimisation.If you found this page making a search then you know that it works!

One of the things that the webmaster has managed to do recently, Spring 2021, is to get pages to rank fairly highly in search engine results. Going forward this may be very useful to the village and the Church as there may be more people looking for local information. The websmaster is currently working on a number of areas in this regard. One of these is the promotion of a "Friends of St.Mary the Virgin, Belchamp Walter" support group.

The Perils of Local SEO

SEO is a powerful tool, perhaps too powerful.

This is particularly the case in the Local context. As I said on another page I am very dissapointed with many of the residents of the local community. This is in part due to the lack of understanding of how technolgy works and a general lack of communication skills.

The fact that I may have used my expertise to post a crtitical report of a particular person may have been a little too harsh. However, I was being ignored on other fronts and at least I am now on the radar screen of that particular individual.

A sad consequence of the fact that Search Engines are not understood and that many in the local community are more interested in what is being said about them or their companies it is not possible to post using their real names. I have an interest in local history but I now feel that I cannot post regarding it as the names of people from the past are now still current with those living in the community. To that end I have started to remove links to those history pages.

February 2023

A server log entry was seen for an access to my original timeline page. This did have the name that I was trying to prevent showing up in a search. I deleted the page.

I am pretty certain that the access was made by someone making a search that I was trying to suppress as the pages accessed from that timeline indicated that name was followed. It was most likely an "Oliver" search as the r_era page was attempted to be accessed (it had already been deleted from the server) and the tomb page was also accessed.

Work continues on this................ The website is still up and running but me efforts in updating it are more or less non-existant.

If activities pick-up after the Covid lockdown then I could promote the events on this website.

What I am trying to do here

I am trying to prevent: "Look, I am famous - you can fid my family (me) on the Internet" or "Your Grandad is a bastard!" comments being made when my pages are found making searches.

My theory on why my page on the memorial in the church gets so many clicks is not that people are interested in the memorial and who is interred there, but by those looking for more current information.

Comments cannot be made on this website as it is not an open forum, but I am guessing by some of the searches that I have seen finding my pages that there are those who are looking either for their own name or someone that they know.

Impressions

March 2022. There seem to be many Impressions not resulting in clicks.

My theory here is that a local web-company is testing their SEO design and are making searches to see if their pages are being found:
