Simon de Pateshull - 13th Century landowner

It was stated by Thomas Wright that Simon de Pateshull held lands in Belchamp Walter. Not much is known about this period in the story of the villages history but the region was part of many estates that was under the control of many barons of the 12th and 13th Centuries.

Pre 1190 until 1217 - Simon was High Sheriff of Essex in 1193 under Richard I

Simon de Pateshull who died in 1217 was a very rich knight accumulating 6 knight's fees.

The Simon de Pateshull, who died in 1274 (1296 according to tw), was probably the son or grandson of the Simon mentioned above.

The Wikipedia page says that Simon de Pateshull died in 1217, the end of KIng John's reign.

Simon de Pateshull was alive in the era of Henry III, the late 13c, if you take TW's dates. I think that TW may have got this wrong (I will have to check my dates).

This page is part of an on-going research project on the history of Belchamp Walter and the manor of Belchamp Walter. If you have found it making a web search looking for geneological or other information on the village then please bookmark this page and return often as I am likely to make regular updates. If you delve deeper into this website you will find many other pages similar to this one.

What Thomas Wright says:

In his The History and Topology of Essex

" Roger de Mowbray, the son of Maud de Mowbray (daughter of William de Beauchamp), held lands here in 1281, of the earl of Oxford; his successor was his son John (de Mowbray) and John de Steyngreve, on his death in 1295, also had possessions here.
Isabel, his only daughter, was married to Simon de Pateshull, who, in her right, held these lands at the time of his death, in 1296. "

The "he" below was Simon de Pateshull of Bletsoe

" He left a son named John, and Isabel, his widow, was married to Walter de Tey (born between circa 1250 and circa 1270). "

The link to wikisource.org (below) gives a little more information and possibly shows an inconsistancy in Thomas Wright's account.

" John de Pateshull (1291?–1349) - married Mabel, sister, and eventually coheiress, of Otho, lord Grandison; was summoned to a council of magnates in 1335
...... four sisters, Sybill, wife of Sir Roger de Beauchamp; Alice, wife of Thomas Wake; Mabel, wife of Walter de Fauconberg .... and Katherine. "

The spelling of Pattishull

It is puzzling that there seems to be little information on the Pattishull family.

Some of the references I have found also substitute "f" for "s", some have a single "t" others "tt". The results are therefore mixed. In addition I am gettting the impression that some of the documents are indexed independently from the image scan of the "ancient" document.

The possible spellings could be:

  • Pateshul
  • Pateshull
  • Pateshulle
  • Pattishull
  • plus more

The manor or castle of Bletsoe is also associated with the Pateshull family name.

Bletsoe Manor next passed to Simon de Patishull, son of Walter and Margery, who between 1247 and 1253 quitclaimed land in Bletsoe to John de Berdefeud and others. (fn. 9) His grandson, also Simon de Patishull, died in 1295, having previously enfeoffed Agnes de Patishull, probably his daughter, and her husband John de Pabenham of the manor for their lives. On the death of Agnes in 1313 Bletsoe passed to John son of Simon de Patishull, (fn. 10) who the same year secured recognition of his right to Bletsoe by fine. (fn. 11) He held the manor till his death in 1349, when he was succeeded by his son William, (fn. 12) who in 1359 left four sisters as co-heirs, of whom Sibyl wife of Roger de Beauchamp received Bletsoe Manor. (fn. 13)

Background to this page

Having seen this page found by those making an Internet search I have decided to add a bit more context.

The page flow of the history pages need to have links on pages that are related to those that are found by search. Which this sounds obvious, some/most of my pages don't have these links.

The Medieval Period of Belchamp Walter's history is not well told and I am trying to put some more background to things.
