Medieval Wall Painting restoration
September 2025 - funding has been found (grants) for the work proposed by Thomas Organ.
Looking at Tom Organ's website, especially the Copford blog entry, I am not quite so sure about the value for money.
I get the impression that the Arte website and Thomas Organ are more show than substance. The website is pretty slick but the information on what he has actually done on the projects he features is pretty slim. The entry on Copford church is a good example. The 1872 Daniel Bell overpainting is probably nothing to do with Tom as the overpainting was so over-done it is still in good shape. Some of the paintings that had not had the "Bell Treatment"
Tom Organ's proposal for the wall paintings needs to be studied further.
Wall Painting Inspection 2023
The medieval wall paintings in St. Mary Belchamp Walter were inspected in March 2023. This included the
paintings the surround the chantry chapel arch of Sir John de Botetourt. It is not known if the other
paintings were inspected.
The other paintings are just as important in the authors opinion.
Arte Conservation
Tom Organ, of Arte Conservation, has been commissioned to return to St. Mary's in 2026 to perform the work prescribed in his 2023 report.
